LiteScape Launches OnCast Communications Client: First Open Source Desktop Client
By Susan J. Campbell TMCnet Contributing Editor
OnCast Communications Client is now available from LiteScape Technologies (News - Alert), Inc., a developer of unified communications applications. This Open Source desktop client is designed to unify access to disparate business applications and data sources with real time IP-based communications systems.
"With the launch of the open source OnCast Client, LiteScape has taken a significant step toward making unified communications as ubiquitous within organizations as email and voicemail are today," said LiteScape's Executive Vice President of Sales and Marketing Rod Hamlin, in a Monday statement.
"Enterprise business users can now leverage VoIP
clients that have had significant consumer adoption such as Skype (News - Alert), in a corporate environment - fully integrated with core business applications such as directories, presence, conferencing, and other forms of collaboration."
As a standalone desktop client, the OnCast Communications Client natively supports a combination of different communications services that includes authentication, presence, remote call control, directory/application integration, collaboration/conferencing and broadcasting/paging.
Users can use the Open Source application to customize the aforementioned services and embed them directly into their own unified communications applications to transform their specific business processes and environments.
"For the first time, organizations can now unify best of breed business applications, presence systems, collaboration solutions and IP
telephony systems in one unified communications solution," Hamlin added.

Several large SI’s and service providers using OnCast are working along with LiteScape to develop and deliver new unified communication applications for their customers, both on-site and in hosted situations.
"The OnCast Communications Client gives organizations tremendous flexibility and power to transform their businesses without sacrificing functionality," said Kayvan Alikhani, executive vice president of product development and management at LiteScape Technologies, in Monday’s statement.
"A company can leverage the OnCast Communications Client as a standalone client to provide a single interface to access multiple corporate directories, presence information and click to call functions on an adjacent IP phone. At the same time, another organization can use the OnCast Communications Client to integrate this same functionality into AOL (News - Alert) Business Edition or Skype, using these as the primary interface for unified communications," Kayvan added.
In addition to OnCast Communications Client, LiteScape has also launched the LiteScape Developer Network, a developer community for ISVs, systems integrators and end users. The network provides tools, documentation and support for applications that leverage the OnCast Communications Client.
Developers will be able to use this forum to have access to reference code samples and detailed documentation that will demonstrate how to develop applications using OnCast Communications Client. Developers will also be able to download LiteScape’s patented Multi-modal Application Platform (MAP) against which to test applications.
Based on LiteScape’s core OnCast unified communications application, OnCast Communications Client integrates real time communications with business processes on any IP device, such as IP phones, wireless devices and PCs. The business process is enabled by unifying disparate applications and data sources with multiple types of telephony systems and devices, such as Asterisk, Avaya (News - Alert), Cisco and Polycom, so that users can automate functions, improve communications and reduce complexity to increase productivity.
The demand has been growing for an Open Source Desktop application. LiteScape recognized the need and launched OnCast Communications Client at an opportune time. While this launch meets a significant need in unifying business processes, the challenge for the company will be ensuring that it keeps on driving innovations to ensure market dominance as competitors enter into the space.
By also launching the LiteScape Developer Network, LiteScape can help to foster loyalty among users while also delivering the tools and support that developers, as well as end users, are demanding. As such, these clients will be able to maximize the benefit of the OnCast Communications Client and LiteScape will protect its customer base.
