Continuent Intros Tungsten Replicator

Continuent has announced an advanced replication for MySQL with its Tungsten Replicator. Continuent Tungsten is an open source stack which is a collection of integrated projects for database scale-out making use of commodity hardware.

Continuent provides commercial open source solutions for database replication and scale-out.

MySQL’s built-in database replication was the main constituent of horizontal scaling solutions for several years. But MySQL poses many limitations like replication weaknesses including replication not being fail safe, the absence of synchronous options and no checking consistency option.

MySQL had other weaknesses also like setup and resync of slave being complicated, a single-thread on the slave and no multi-master.

Continuent is a longstanding MySQL partner besides having experience in high-end replication solutions. The company has tried to solve the problems found in MySQL and the initial feature set for Continuent Tungsten Replicator includes simple set-up procedure besides proper handling of master failover in the presence of multiple slaves for high availability.

Continuent Tungsten Replication also offers master/slave replication on one, some or all databases besides offering MySQL statement replication. Checksums on replication events and table consistency check mechanism are also included in the replicator which can run on Linux, Solaris and Windows.

Continuent announced that its Tungsten roadmap includes graphical management tools, Oracle (News - Alert) support, PostgreSQL support, MySQL row replication and heterogeneous replication like MySQL to Oracle and vice versa. It will also feature multi-master via bi-directional replication with conflict resolution, semi-synchronous replication, parallel update on slaves for better performance and proxying support for bringing down or removing application changes.

The Continuent Tungsten architecture is database-neutral as the same framework can support more than one different database. Users will benefit as a single product can replicate data on different database types. The heterogeneous replication aspect supports data integration projects between MySQL and other databases like Oracle.

“As a MySQL Gold Partner, we have been offering synchronous master-master replication solution for years,” said Eero Teerikorpi, CEO at Continuent. “With MySQL being widely deployed for Web-tier applications, a consistent message from our mutual customers has been the need for better master-slave replication than current solutions. Scalability and reliability with seamless failover and no performance loss are absolutely crucial for them. Tungsten delivers this.”
Continuent is a scale-out company which provides solutions for enabling continuous availability and incremental performance scaling using commodity hardware and databases. The continuous uptime helps in the delivery of business critical database applications with optimum availability and accessibility.
