Server Technology Tames 3-Phase Power
By Richard Grigonis Executive Editor, IP Communications Group
As enterprise datacenters, service providers and branch office locations grow in size and number, reliable power management/distribution for equipment racks and other data center applications becomes a major issue. One company, Server Technology (News - Alert) (http://servertech.com) offers the Sentry family of cabinet power distribution and environmental monitoring products that combine intelligent power distribution, remote management and power measurement, thus eliminating unnecessary trips by technical staff to remote locations and minimizing the impact of locked-up internetworking equipment on business-critical, revenue-generating networks.
The Reno, Nevada-based company’ products unite all of the various functions a data center or remote site manager needs to manage each equipment cabinet, reduce downtime and improve data center power management, such as intelligent power distribution, remote management to reboot connected devices, input current power monitoring, environmental monitoring and serial console port access. Server Technology’s offerings range from integrated solutions to individual Sentry cabinet power distribution units (CDUs), allowing you to design your own solution for datacenter equipment cabinet.
High density, blade server
power requirements in today’s datacenter environments have led to new and innovative solutions for providing cabinet level power utilizing modular CDUs.
Recently, for example. Server Technology announced a new family of modular 3-phase power distribution products for high-density, high-power demand equipment cabinets. The Sentry Modular Cabinet Power Distribution Unit family is designed to take a 3-phase in-feed and distribute single phase power via Basic CDUs placed anywhere inside the cabinet. Each Basic CDU has an associated LED meter for simple load balancing. The Master unit contains the LED meters, one temperature/humidity probe input, serial connection, IP
connection and exclusive link port to connect an expansion CDU for linking CDU’s on different power circuits together.
Smart Modular products allow the use of a secure network interface to view current, power, temperature and humidity levels via a web browser or Enterprise View software. Moreover, SNMP based alarms and email alerts can be received when thresholds are exceeded.

A single power in-feed of 3-Phase 208 V 30/60 A or 400 V 32 A can provide from 10.8 to 22.2 kW of power to the cabinet. For greater densities or for redundancy dual in-feeds can be provided with two modular units linked together under one IP address providing anywhere from 21.6 to 44.4 kW of power delivered to the cabinet.
Vertical, Zero U mounting on the side or back of the cabinet ensures that valuable U space is not taken up by the Modular PDU (Power Distribution Unit) as well as ensuring that the unit does not block airflow. It also aides cable management.
IP Access and Security features include the following: Web interface, SSL, SSH, Telnet, SNMP, FTP, SNTP, Syslog, LDAP
, LDAPS, TACACS+ and serial RS-232 access.
