Epson Develops HCSL Output SAW Oscillators for High-Speed Interfaces

Japan-based Epson Toyocom Corporation, the company that markets and sells a wide array of crystals, oscillators, rea- time clock modules, SAW products, optical devices and gyro sensors, has developed two new HCSL (high-speed, current-steering logic) output Surface-Acoustic-Wave (SAW) oscillators, the EG-2102CA HCSL and the EG-2121CA HCSL, ideal for PCI Express and FB-DIMM applications.

As high frequency oscillators have become essential for wireless systems, designers are making serious efforts to meet the demand for low phase noise oscillators which can eliminate errors during data transmission at a reasonable cost. Epson Toyocom’s EG series of low jitter, low phase noise SAW oscillators are designed to meet such challenges and come with the ability generate oscillations at the fundamental frequency, for high-speed interfaces in LAN and SAN devices.

Epson Toyocom plans to develop and commercialize space-saving, high-frequency crystal devices for the next-generation network market, which will provide a variety of services, such as voice, data, TV telephony and video, over IP.

Epson Toyocom’s recently launched oscillators support fundamental frequency outputs as high as 500 MHz owing to Epson Toyocom's high-stability SAW devices. With low jitter and low phase noise characteristics at the fundamental frequency, typical phase jitter is 0.3 ps (offset frequency of 12 kHz - 20 MHz and output frequency of 100 MHz).

Additionally, the SAW Oscillators are slim and support HCSL output, making them ideal for PCI Express and FB-DIMM clocks.

Other specifications of EG-2102CA HCSL and EG-2121CA HCSL include a frequency tolerance of ±100 x 10-6 Max. / ±50 x 10-6 Max; operating temperature range of -5 to +85°C / -20 to +70°C / 0 to +70°C; Output frequency range of 100 to 500 MHz; Supply voltage of 3.3 V ±0.3 V/ 2.5 V ±0.125 V; current consumption of 85 mA Max. / 80 mA Max.: Output voltage of 0 to +0.75 V Typ., Phase jitter of 0.3 ps Typ. (Offset frequency: 12 kHz to 20 MHz) and external dimensions of 7.0 x 5.0 x 1.25t mm Typ.
