Wind River Joins OpenSAF Foundation

The OpenSAF Foundation this week announced that Wind River (News - Alert) Systems has become the organization’s newest member. Wind River is a provider of device software and an embedded Linux distributor.

Wind River joins other major corporations in a project to develop and create a reference implementation of high availability (HA) base platform middleware. This middleware is based on SA Forum specifications as well as SCOPE Alliance recommendations.

The new project member will support developers’ efforts to accelerate and complete the  OpenSAF project. Additionally, Wind River will join the OpenSAF Foundation’s Board of Directors to assist in driving the adoption of an HA middleware implementation across the telecommunications and networking industries.

“Wind River is a strong supporter of the open source movement and we believe there is a clear trend in the industry to move open source software up the stack beyond the operating system,” said Glenn Seiler, director of networking strategy and solutions at Wind River. “HA Middleware is a key building block that is now being addressed by the open source community, just like the operating system with Linux was 10 years ago.”

Seiler added: “The OpenSAF Foundation is a frontrunner in promoting next-generation open source HA solutions, and Wind River is delighted to join this movement.”

The OpenSAF Foundation is a nonprofit organization dedicated to supporting open source high-availability base platform middleware consistent with the Service Availability Forum. Founded in January of 2008, the Foundation offers an environment for implementing and testing middleware, focusing on any priorities and gaps identified by the SCOPE Alliance.

“OpenSAF is pleased to have Wind River join the foundation,” said John Fryer, president of OpenSAF Foundation. “As one of the leaders in the Open Source community Wind River well positioned to make significant contributions to both the Foundation and the OpenSAF project in completing the software and accelerating its utilization and adoption by the Telecommunications industry as well as the High Availability segment of the IT industry. We look forward to working with them towards the completion of the OpenSAF project.”

OpenSAF’s initial code base was contributed by Emerson Network Power (News - Alert). It is licensed under the GNU Lesser General Public License, version 2.1 (LGPL v2.1). Everyone is welcome to participate in the project by downloading the code, in keeping with the terms and conditions of the LGPL v2.1 license.
