A group of companies, working together with the IPv6 Forum, have announced the successful completion of a series of VoIP calls over IPv6, the network layer protocol designed to increase the number of available addresses for networked devices. The VoIP calls, which connected Viagenie in Canada and Consulintel in Spain, were initiated from a CounterPath eyeBeam softphone and carried across the IPv6 version of Asterisk (News - Alert), ported by Viagenie. The Asterisk-IPv6 server was located on Stealth Communications' Voice Peering Fabric (VPF) network.

 

Asterisk is the well-known open source telephone software developed by Mark Spencer of Digium (News - Alert). The software, which is designed to offer complete IP PBX (News - Alert) functionality for businesses, is freely downloadable from Asterisk.org.

 

Earlier this month, the Asterisk and Zaptel development teams released an updated version of Asterisk, release 1.4.1. This release contains a large number of bug fixes, including a fix for recently discovered security vulnerability.

 

According to Marc Blanchet, President of Viagenie, “Asterisk-IPv6 shows the power of VoIPv6 by avoiding all issues regarding NAT traversal when using IPv4.”

 

Blanchet was set to present a session this morning (March 8) titled Asterisk with IPv6: Seamless and Ubiquitous VoIP at the Voice Peering Forum being held in Miami. The Voice Peering Forum continues to host experts from leading global companies who will discuss the latest innovations and implementations in Voice-over-IP (VoIP) and Voice Peering.

Blanchett believes that the Asterisk software solves many existing issues, such as non-connecting calls, one-way audio, and non-working DTMF that plagued users of IPv4. “Asterisk-IPv6 solves all these issues and also brings, together with IPv6, true IP mobility, security and autoconfiguration of VoIPv6 phones,” he said.
