By Jai C.S. TMCnet Contributing Editor
PhoneFromHere.com has just signed a five year agreement with Digium (News - Alert), developer of the Asterisk open source telephony platform, to improve and commercialize the embedded Java softphone created by Digium engineers.
PhoneFromHere.com enables instant, verbal communication to Web users and online communities. The company is setting up new standards to integrate voice technologies in the networking market. In the process of preparing itself to become a dominant player in the emerging market, PhoneFromHere.com has been signing more integration projects and agreements that give them a competitive edge.
One of the unique aspects of PhoneFromHere.com is that it provides Web users immediate access to voice communication without downloading any software, surrendering personal information, or using a phone.
Creative and innovative Web applications play a very crucial role in the development of verbal communication service and also the future communication systems. Established in the year 1999, Digium believes in the communications systems through the application of open source software. The company’s product line includes a wide range of hardware to enable resellers and customers to implement turnkey solutions or to design their own voice over IP
(VoIP) systems.
Asterisk (News - Alert) supports a wide range of TDM
protocols for the handling and transmission of voice over traditional telephony interfaces, featuring VoIP packet protocols such as SIP and IAX.
Under this five-year agreement Digium will be working closely with the development community which allows them to keep in tune with new innovations. The code supplied by Digium will be used to empower PhoneFromHere.com’s verbal communication application.
Jim Webster, Director of Technology Partnerships at Digium indicated that the expertise of PhoneFromHere.com will help Digium add value to another one of its many assets.
“The Digium code will greatly improve the audio quality of our technology. Plus, it comes from a prominent pedigree of code and developers that created the likes of Asterisk and IAX, among others,” said Tim Panton, founder and CEO, PhoneFromHere.com.
Panton added that this opportunity represents a significant milestone in the development of the company and to contribute new ways that will add value to a particular pre-existing asset of Digium.
